I hate that thought!
In our day-to-day lives, it's easy to distance ourselves from the stories we hear about substance use and mental health struggles. We often think of them as problems that happen to "other people." But what if it were my family? This simple yet profound question forces us to confront the reality that these issues are not distant or abstract. They can—and do—affect families just like ours. Every someone struggling with mental health or substance use issues has a family – and they are hurting. Are you one?
Substance use and mental health issues do not discriminate. They cut across all demographics, impacting people of every age, race, and socioeconomic status. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, over 20 million Americans over the age of 12 had a substance use disorder in 2019. Meanwhile, the National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness each year. Hastings is reported by the Sheriff’s office as the #1 location in Dakota County for crisis situations.
Understanding and recognizing the signs of substance use and mental health issues is the first step toward addressing them. These signs can be subtle at first, such as changes in mood, behavior, or daily habits. Substance use might begin with casual use that gradually becomes more frequent and harmful. Mental health issues might manifest as persistent sadness, anxiety, or erratic behavior.
Asking "What if it were my family?" encourages us to pay closer attention to the well-being of our loved ones. It compels us to notice changes that might otherwise go unaddressed and to act with compassion and urgency.
If it were my family, seeking help would be a priority. It's important to research local resources, such as mental health clinics, rehabilitation centers, and support groups. Rise Up Recovery offers support groups for both those struggling and family members of those struggling.
